Avascular Necrosis

thDiagnoses: Avascular Necrosis refers to the breakdown of bone tissue secondary to a comprised blood supply. Blood flow can become impaired if the hip is fractured or dislocated.

Symptoms: Symptoms are not typically present in the early stages of the condition. As avascular necrosis worsens, pain might be felt while weight bearing or even lying down. Pain ranges from mild to severe and may be located in the groin, thigh, or buttock.

Causes: Avascular Necrosis occurs due to a limited blood supply to the hip. Causes of this could include:

  • Joint or bone trauma
  • Fatty deposits or blood vessels
  • Diseases such as sickle cell anemia or Gaucher’s disease

Our Physical Therapy Treatment: Treatment will be dependent on the patient and their response to exercise. Treatment might include:

  • Mechanical diagnoses/treatment
  • Stretching exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercises
  • Manual mobilizations
  • Soft tissue mobilizations
  • Task specific performance analysis
